Upgrade Notes

General Upgrade Notes

The current release is designed to be backwards compatible with prior versions. Because export formats are not recognised by previous versions of the software, it is recommended that all users upgrade to same version at the same time.
As with any upgrade, please ensure you perform thorough backups of your current Visual Time Sheet data and application files (on your own machine/s and any workgroup servers) before installing the new software.

Notes for Version 3.3.3 ( Vista Support)

The main feature in this release is technical, adding support for installations on Microsoft Vista. However, this change affects users on all Windows versions, as it changes where data files are stored.

Changes to Data File Locations

As Vista now controls how applications write to data in Program Files directories, this version of Visual Time Sheet creates data and other application files it needs in a new location, a directory on the user's profile.

By default, this location is defined by a Windows system setting. For example, on Windows XP it may be something like "C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Great Circle Software\Visual Time Sheet".

If you are installing this version as an upgrade to an existing installation, your local data will be automatically copied to the new location the first time you run v3.3. Data will be left in the old location, but only the new location will be used going forward. Users operating within a work group will continue to use the same server location for their files - this change only affects where the data is stored on the user's machine.

Important Questions

Where are my files being stored?
To learn where your files are being stored, click the help icon at the top right of the Visual Time Sheet main window. Select "Data location information..." from the menu, and a dialog box will display local and server data locations. This information is also placed on the Windows clipboard so you can easily share and reuse it.

What about my local data back-ups?
You will need to identify where your local data is being stored and change any local back-up procedures to operate on the new location. If you aren't doing local data back-ups, now is a good time to start!

Can I change where my local files are being stored?
If you wish to force Visual Time Sheet to use a different directory for its local files (other than the default above), a new command line parameter for the executable file allows the location to be defined in the application short-cut.

What are the benefits?
This change allows the software to install and operate under Vista without manual intervention. It also allows multiple users on all supported Windows operating systems to share the same computer and retain their own settings and data when logged in under different user profiles.
